
Making Smart Infrared Heaters That Actually Last
We wanted to build an infrared table heater that doesn’t freak out the moment it gets a bit damp. That’s why we went with an IP55 rating. In plain English? It means the heater can handle dust and the occasional splash of water without dying. If you’re using it in a humid room or you’re the type of person who wipes down every surface with a wet cloth, this is for you.
Heat, right now.
Most heaters are slow. They try to warm up the whole room’s air, which takes forever. Our units use short-wave infrared. Instead of fighting with the air, they beam heat directly at you. The second that relay clicks, the filament hits temperature in a heartbeat. You don’t wait around for the room to “warm up”—you just feel the heat immediately. It’s a total shift in how you experience warmth.
Making it “Smart”
Getting these to work with one click isn’t just about adding a chip. We use Zigbee or Matter to link the heater to your smart home gateway. But here’s the tricky part: infrared lamps pull a lot of power the moment they kick on. If you use a cheap switch, it’ll fry. We use a heavy-duty power relay that can handle that initial surge without breaking a sweat. Now, you can set it up however you like. Want the heat to kick in the moment you walk into the room? Hook it up to an occupancy sensor. Want it warm before you even wake up? Set a timer. The gateway sends the signal, the relay snaps shut, and you’re warm. Simple.
A quick warning on setup
Before you go wild and plug ten of these in, check your breakers. These things pull a decent amount of wattage. If you put too many on one 15A circuit, you’re going to be staring at a tripped breaker. It’s worth spending a few minutes mapping out your wiring so your junction boxes don’t get too hot. And please, do me a favor:don’t use a cheap smart plug. I’ve seen people try it, and it usually ends with a melted controller. Stick with a dedicated, heavy-duty relay. Your house will thank you.
