
Why We Stress-Test Every Single Heater
In a high-volume fab drying line, one bad heating element is more than just a nuisance. It’s a nightmare. A single leak or a faulty lamp can trip the power for an entire production floor or fry your equipment’s chassis. That’s why we don’t do “random sampling.” We don’t just check every tenth part and hope for the best. Instead, every single lamp and heating component goes through a full Dielectric Withstand (HiPot) and Insulation Resistance (IR) test before it even touches a shipping box. It’s a hard rule. No exceptions.
Pushing the limits (on purpose)
Here is how we handle the dielectric testing: we basically try to break the thing. We hit the insulation with high voltage—usually double or triple what it’ll see during normal operation—between the live wire and the grounded case. We’re looking for the breaking point. If the insulation is weak, the current arcs right through. When it passes, you know the quartz or ceramic housing can handle those sudden voltage spikes without leaking. It gives you peace of mind.
The difference between “working” and “healthy”
Now, you might wonder why we bother with IR testing if we already checked for continuity. Continuity just tells us the circuit is closed—basically, “Is the power getting through?” But IR testing tells us if the insulation is actually holding up. Using a megohmmeter, we push a DC voltage through the insulation and measure the leakage in giga-ohms. If those numbers are low, it usually means there’s some gunk on the lamp surface or a tiny micro-crack in the seal. In a fab, a little bit of dust or moisture can create a path for electricity to wander where it shouldn’t. We’d rather catch those “ghost” defects in our shop than have you dealing with intermittent shorts on your line at 3 AM.
The trade-off
I’ll be honest: this level of testing is tough on the parts. If a tube is barely within spec, the HiPot test will probably kill it. But that’s exactly the point. We want the tube to burn out on our workbench, not inside your machine. It means you get a rock-solid setup. Just a heads-up for your maintenance crew: keep those connectors clean and seated tight. That’s the only way to make sure the insulation levels we verified in the factory actually hold up in the real world.
