
Why Your Outdoor Heater’s Wiring Actually Matters
Outdoor infrared heaters live a rough life. They go from freezing cold to blistering hot in seconds, over and over again. When you’re cranking up the wattage, there’s one spot that usually takes the hit: right where the lead wire hits the heating element. Most cheap heaters just slap some glue or shrink wrap on that joint and call it a day. Trust me, that doesn’t work.
The heat doesn’t just stay put
Here’s the thing: heat travels. It doesn’t just stay in the element; it crawls right up those wires. If the seal isn’t built for that kind of stress, it starts to get brittle. It cracks. And once you’ve got a crack, you’ve got a doorway. Rain, dew, and humidity sneak inside and create a bridge between the live wire and the metal frame. That’s how you end up with a short circuit. Not exactly what you want when you’re trying to stay warm.
Doing it the right way
A lot of assembly lines cut corners here. They skip the vacuum-sealing or the high-end silicone potting because it takes more time. We do it differently. We use industrial-grade potting compounds that actually bond to the wire insulation. It stops the “breathing” effect—that annoying cycle of expanding and contracting—which is usually how water finds its way in. We make sure these seals can handle heat that would literally melt standard PVC. Plus, we’re obsessive about making the potting uniform. If you get an air pocket in there, you get a hotspot. And hotspots are just a countdown to a burnt-out wire.
A quick heads-up on installation
There is a trade-off, though. Because this sealing is so heavy-duty, the wires are a bit stiffer. Don’t try to force them into a tight bend during installation. If you kink the wire or jam it into a tiny housing, you might crack that seal, and then you’ve basically undone all the hard work. Just give the wiring some room to curve naturally. Keep it loose, follow the bend radius in the manual, and your heater will actually last.
