
Keeping Things Safe in Flammable Cleaning Zones
If you’re running infrared heating around chemical cleaning lines, you already know the deal. You’re working with volatile solvents and flammable vapors. It’s a high-stakes environment. The problem is that standard short-wave lamps kick out UV emissions, which create ozone (O3). In a closed chemical space, ozone is more than just a nuisance—it can react with organic solvents to create unstable compounds or speed up oxidation. That’s a recipe for a bad day. We use ozone-free infrared lamps to take that risk off the table.
How we stop the ozone
It comes down to the coating. We use a specialized quartz envelope that acts as a filter. It blocks those vacuum UV wavelengths (anything below 200nm) that normally rip oxygen molecules apart in the air. You still get all the thermal energy you need to get the cleaning done, but you don’t get the hazardous gas. Simple.
Dealing with explosive atmospheres
When you’re in a “Zone 1” or “Zone 2” area, a bare lamp is basically a liability. You can’t have it just sitting there. So, we seal the units in housings made of tempered glass or explosion-proof quartz. This keeps the flammable vapors from ever touching the hot surface of the lamp. We also lean heavily on high-temp silicone gaskets and reinforced seals where the wiring enters. It keeps the chemical mist out. And if a seal ever does give way? We’ve spec’d the internal volume and wattage so the surface temperature stays below the auto-ignition point of your chemicals. It’s an extra layer of sleep-better-at-night insurance.
The trade-offs (because there’s always one)
Here is the catch: adding that protective housing creates a bit of thermal resistance. You’ll notice the heat transfer isn’t quite as efficient as it would be with an open-air lamp. To fix that, you just need to bump up the wattage or move the lamp a bit closer to the workpiece. One last tip—make sure your cooling fans are rated for hazardous areas. If heat builds up around the electrical connectors, you’re looking at a premature burnout. And nobody wants to deal with that mid-shift.
